The city of Monterey is located in central California, on the Pacific coast, in Monterey County. Situated on Monterey Bay, this resort town has a population of around 30,000 residents. All of the luxury Monterey hotels are conveniently located near this resort town's interesting things to see and do.

The popular Fisherman's Wharf offers a variety of activities, such as fishing, whale watching tours, sailing, boat tours, shopping and dining. The waterfront Cannery Row area is also home to some of the city's best attractions, shops and restaurants.

One of the city's most popular attractions is the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium has more than 200 exhibits of amphibians, invertebrates, reptiles, fish, plants and algae, birds, marine mammals and a variety of octopus. The aquarium is open every day with hours varying by season, but it is generally open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The 8,500 square foot Monterey County Youth Museum has interactive exhibits that encourage and invite visitors to participate in learning. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Monterey Museum of Art has two locations, one on Pacific Street and one on Via Mirada. The Pacific Street location houses the museum's collection of central California art while the Via Mirada location houses the museum's modern and Asian art collection. Both locations are open Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Presidio of Monterey Museum features exhibits that describe the city's military history and development. It is open Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Colton Hall Museum houses exhibits that detail the history of the area and document the drafting of the first state constitution, which was drafted in the building in 1849. It is open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Next to Colton Hall, the Old Monterey Jail is now open to the public for tours, but it was once the city's only jail, from 1854 until 1956. The jail is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Monterey State Historic Park is made up of a number of historic homes and buildings throughout the city. The bulk of the buildings offer tours, but tickets must be obtained at the Pacific House Museum. Hours vary seasonally. The city and the adjacent area are internationally recognized for the abundance of quality golf courses. There are 14 public courses in the county, all of which are par-71 and above.

In nearby Salinas, the National Steinbeck Center celebrates the life and impact of the famous author, John Steinbeck, who was born and raised in this coastal, central California area. It is open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Carmel Mission, located in Carmel-by-the-Sea is home to five museums: The Basilica Church, the Convento Museum, the Harry Downie Museum, Jo Mora Chapel Gallery and the Munrás Family Heritage Museum. All of the museums are open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Big Sur area has some of the most outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities available in the state. Sea otters, humpback whales, blue whales, condors, elephant seals and monarch butterflies all populate this beautiful area.

The Blues Festival takes place every June and features, of course, a variety of live blues performances. In August, the Monterey County Fair occurs. It has rides, food and craft vendors and a number of competitions, ranging from agricultural to culinary. The most famous festival in town is the Monterey Jazz Festival, which takes place every September and showcases some of the most famous jazz musicians and singers in the world.

The average low in the spring is about 47 degrees Fahrenheit and the average high reaches 64. In the summer, the low is usually around 52 and the high climbs to 68 degrees. The low in the fall averages 51 degrees with highs coming in at 70. Wintertime lows are around 50 and the high gets up to about 62 degrees.
